Healthy and Refreshing: DIY Frozen Treats for Your Dog’s Summer Delight

dog behavior
As the weather gets warmer with the start of summer, it’s important to keep your dog cool in the heat. One way to do this that your pup will love is with frozen treats! Giving your dog a frozen snack to help them beat the heat is a great way to keep your dog cool as they enjoy the summer weather.

Below, we provide easy and delicious DIY frozen dog treat recipes that you can try with your dog this summer!

Frozen Treats Recipe 1: Blueberry Freeze

Ingredients: Yields 8 treats

  • ¾ cup blueberries
  • ¾ cup greek yogurt, low fat preferably
  • ½ banana, ripe

Instructions:

  1. Measure out the above ingredients and place them in a food processor (or blender).
  2. Blend the ingredients until fully combined, usually takes about 90 seconds.
  3. Pour mixtures into an ice tray or treat molds.
  4. Place treats in freezer until fully frozen (at least one hour)
  5. Remove from the tray and enjoy!

What Makes These Frozen Treats Great:

  • They are simple, delicious, and safe for your dog!
  • There’s only 3 ingredients, making it affordable and easy to make: just blueberries, banana, and greek yogurt!
  • The prep work is a breeze! All you need is a treat mold or ice tray (something that is a manageable size for your dog to snack on) a food processor or blender, and a freezer! Prep work only takes about 5 minutes and freezing the treats takes an hour before they’re ready to eat.
  • These treats are easy to store and take on the go. Simply pack them in your cooler with ice to keep them cool, and give them to your dog to cool them down on the go!

Other Things To Note About These Treats:

  • You can store these in the freezer for up to 3 months. So, you can make a larger batch and use them all summer long!
  • These treats can get messy as they melt, so we suggest eating them outside to keep your dog cool in the summer heat

Frozen Treats Recipe 2: Watermelon Pup-sicles

Ingredients:

  • Watermelon, that’s it!

Instructions:

  1. Cut up the watermelon into bite size pieces
  2. Put the pieces into a freezer-safe container.
  3. Freeze for at least 1 hour
  4. Remove and enjoy!

What Makes These Frozen Treats Great:

  • They are so easy to make! With only one ingredient and minimal prep work–all you need is a knife to cut the melon and a freezer to store it–this treat truly is as simple as it gets.
  • Dogs LOVE watermelon and will happily munch on these frozen treats, helping them stay cool. But these treats aren’t just great for your pup. These are great treats for kids, too, helping all your loved ones stay cool this summer.

Other Things To Note About These Treats:

  • Make sure to use fresh watermelon, not watermelon from a can. These types of watermelon can have added sugars, which are no good for your canine companion.
