Understanding E-Collar Training: A Comprehensive Guide for Dog Owners

What is an E-Collar?

An E-Collar is a remote activated dog training system. Modern technology E-collars consist of a wireless remote and wireless receiver. The remote is used by the owner/trainer to remotely send signals to your dog to reinforce good behavior or curb bad behavior. The electronic receiver is shaped like a collar that comfortably sits around your dog’s neck like a regular collar.

Our collars use a form of stimulus that targets the neck muscles of the dog like a medical “Tens Machine” used on humans for physical therapy purposes. The technology we use is “modern and cutting edge” E-Collar equipment and not the old “shock collar” methods of the past. With Landheim’s training, you will be able to encourage your dog to perform happier and with quicker response times using our methods.

How to Use an E-Collar

In order to train your pup with an E-Collar, you will need to purchase a suitable brand. Finding an E-Collar with at least 100 levels is what the professionals at Landheim K9 recommend for best training practices. We prefer the E-Collar Technologies Mini Educator or the Dogtra dog systems, but any reputable brand with 100 levels will work for E-Collar training. These 100-level E-Collars use a form of stimulus that targets the neck muscles of the dog.  With stimulation levels ranging from 1 to 100, these collars allow you to adjust the stimulation to a level that is best suited to gently communicate with your dog. This “best level” can be locked to prevent over-stimulation and easily adjusted for a higher distraction environment when necessary. Obtaining an appropriate modern technology E-Collar is vital for proper low-level

E-Collar training.

E-Collar Training Tips

Using an E-Collar effectively requires proper training of the owner. While you can take on E-Collar training on your own, sometimes it’s hard to know if what you’re doing is best for your dog. That’s why E-Collar training classes are invaluable. One important tip if you are going to do E-Collar training is to properly acclimate your dog to the E-Collar before you start using the new collar for training. We like to place the E-Collar on the dog daily for routine activities the dog enjoys for a period of about two weeks or longer. We do not want the dog to associate the E-Collar with the training. It should be treated like “just another new collar”. Leave the controller in the box during this time so you are not tempted to use it prematurely. Following this procedure will give you much better results in your E-Collar training. To participate in Landheim’s E-Collar training, you and your pup must have graduated from a basic Obedience course. Also, you must have purchased a 100-level E-Collar to participate. Luckily, we have appropriate E-Collars for sale at a discounted price in our facility for your convenience. Once you’ve undergone Basic Obedience training, obtained your E-Collar and properly acclimated your dog to the new collar you’re ready to schedule your E-Collar training class with Landheim K9

So, what can you expect from our E-Collar training course? In our course you will learn modern techniques for pairing the low-level collar stimulation with food reward for basic obedience commands. We also add the PLACE command as well as E-Collar heeling. We will also address how to use your collar for correcting bad behavior in the home and yard so you can get the most out of your e-collar after completing the course.
