Winter Walks with Your Dog: Tips for Staying Active During the Colder Months

As winter settles in, it’s tempting to stay indoors in the warmth with your dog, but at Landheim K9, we believe winter walks can still be a fun and active way to bond with your furry friend. However, keeping your dog safe, warm, and comfortable during these cold months is key. Here are some tips to make the most of your winter outings.

Understanding Your Dog’s Winter Needs

While many dogs can handle the cold, certain breeds—like short-haired dogs, small dogs, and seniors—are more vulnerable to the chilly temperatures. Keep an eye out for signs that your dog is uncomfortable, such as lifting paws off the ground, shivering, or slowing down. If you see these signs, it’s time to head indoors. For dogs more tolerant of cold, such as Huskies or Malamutes, longer walks are fine but be cautious of frostbite or wet paws.

Winter Walk Safety Tips

  • Keep Your Dog Warm: A well-fitting dog coat is a great investment for cold weather, especially for small or short-haired breeds. Look for coats that are waterproof or insulated to help your dog retain body heat.
  • Protect Their Paws: Ice, salt, and chemicals can irritate or injure your dog’s paws. Consider using dog booties or wiping their paws off after each walk to prevent frostbite or irritation. Avoid walking on heavily salted areas whenever possible.
  • Monitor for Hypothermia: Prolonged exposure to extreme cold can cause hypothermia or frostbite. If temperatures are below 20°F (-6°C), limit outdoor time, and keep walks short. Be aware of frostbite on exposed skin, especially on ears, paws, and tails.
  • Stay Visible: Winter days are shorter, so make sure you and your dog are visible in low-light conditions. Reflective vests or LED collars are great for visibility and safety during early evening or early morning walks.

Fun Winter Activities

Winter doesn’t have to mean a pause in fun! Here are some ways to keep your dog(and you) active:

  • Snow Play: If you’re lucky enough to get snow, let your dog enjoy a fun time. Snow provides natural stimulation and exercise, but be cautious of cold paws or exhaustion.
  • Shorter, Frequent Walks: If the cold is too much for a long walk, try taking multiple shorter walks throughout the day. This helps your dog stay active without overexposure to the cold.
  • Indoor Activities: On especially cold days, consider indoor games like fetch, tug-of-war, or interactive puzzle toys to keep your dog entertained and active.
